the candle
« on: May 20, 2011, 01:15:44 pm »
In line 72 it says, "A momment later he blew out his candle.  It bothered him."  No one knew his real identity.  He was in his apartment, which wouldn't be strange to anyone out that late.  So why did he blow the candle out?  Give it some thought and develop some insight into what he was going through.

i think he blew the candle out because the candle resembled his identity and when he blew it out that was him saying if i just keep quiet i wont go to jail.

I think that the reason he blew the candle out is every time he looked at the flame it reminded him of the bishop& how he was suppose to change his ways . He felt guilty for not saying anything about the truth, that he was Jean ValJean. It went against his religion for not being honest to the guard and not coming out and telling the truth .

I think he blew out the candle so that he could try to hind in the dark form all of his pain. He probably thought that if he was in the dark he could dream that all this didnt happen and return to normal life. :)

He wanted to hide from the world because someone else is going to jail for his wrong doings by breaking perol.

maybe he blew out the candle so that he couldnt see him self because he felt like some one was watching him, and if he blew out the candle it would be dark and no one would be about to see him not even his self.

he might not have wanted anyone to know he was at home or he didnt like the brightness of the candle because he might not have been very bright

I think that Jean Valjean blew out the candle because noone knew his true identity so he blew out the candle so noone would ever find out

I think he blew out the candle beause it reminded him of the Bishop's and his conversation. Valjean didn't want the candle to bring up his conscience and lean towards a decision for him. The candle made him think of his commitment towards God and doing the right thing.
