In lines 97-98 it says, "He went to the window and threw it wide open. There was not one star in the sky. He went back and sat down by the table." What was the author's purpose in pointing out that there weren't any stars?
I think that the reason there weren't any stars is because it has something to do with his religion. His god could be angry and to show that he doesn't put out the beautiful stars for him to see them . It would make Jean ValJean feel like he was in the darkness for his wrong and that he should confess to his wrong doing .
