Post your argument as to what you think Valjean will choose to do. Will he decide to turn himself in or will he choose to keep his mouth shut and let the other man go to prison? Be sure to back up your argument with logic, quotes from the reading, and line reference numbers.

Well I think that Jean valjean or M. Madeleine is going to let Champmathieu go to prison and go on with his good old life by the way he was speaking in the end of this section of the reading” What am I afraid of? Why am I pondering these things? Now I’m safe. It’s all over” line 146 and 147.you can clearly see that he has no concern for Champmathieus well being, as jean valjean or M.Madeleine what ever u want to call him said line 135 and 136 ” At this very moment, he had a substitute, that a man named Champmathieu had that bad luck”.

I think that Jean ValJean should not turn himself in because if he did, he would have to go back to prison or even worse the electric chair!
Javert already caught his “Jean ValJean”, cause as it said in paragraph 147, line 153, and “He caught his Jean ValJean!” But the ValJean he caught was a man named Champmathieu. So ValJean or Monsieur Madeleine was safe and it was smart for him to stay quiet.

I think that M. Madeleine will let the Champmathieu go to jail for him. I think this because in line one hundred twenty nine he says “all I have to do is leave things alone.” This leads more towards my point. During the reading it talks about how he would like this to be behind him. Form line one hundred forty six through one hundred fifty two it states and I quote “now I am safe I have no reason to be afraid it’s all over.”
From line one hundred thirty four through one hundred forty six I quote “at this very moment I have a substitute, that a man named Champmathieu has some bad luck.” In line thirty seven I quote “sacrificing the first virtue for the security of his name.” For these reasons I believe the M. Madeleine will let Champmathieu go to jail.

What I think he would do is say that he is not Jean Val Jean and let the other man have his punishment but if he don’t he`ll just say that he is Jean Val Jean and do the right thing .If he says that he is not Jean Val Jean then he`ll think to say “At this very moment, he had a substitute, that a man named Champmathieu had that back luck.” But if he says that if he is Jean Val Jean then he`ll think to say “This was his torment.”
If I was him I would do both I would say that I am Jean Val Jean and I’ll say that I’m not Jean Val Jean and that I would and wouldn’t have to go to jail. I would say that I’m not Jean Val Jean and just act like nothing happened and that I’m free. But if I say that I am Jean Val Jean then I’ll have him take me to jail for my punishment / death.

I think Valjean will keep his mouth shut, even if it is for just a little bit. In the writing, around lines 54 and 55, he says, "Let's see! Let's see!" meaning he's gonna wait and see what happens.

I think he will keep his mouth shut because he has became a good, honest man. He has overcame his old name and his former life in prison. He is a sucessful mayor and owner of a factory that most people of the town work at.

I think that he will go back to prison and let the innocent man go. I think this because it says in the passage, “What He Wanted to Keep outside Had Come In, What He Wanted to Blind Was Looking Right at Him, His Conscience. His Conscience or God.” If his conscience is looking at him in the eyes, then it must be telling him the right thing to do is the right way to go. He started asking himself many questions in the passage, here are some examples of them, “Where am I? Am I dreaming? What have I heard? Is it really true that I saw this Javert, and he talked to me this way? Who can this Champ Mathieu be? So he looks like me, does he? When I think that yesterday I was so calm, and so far from suspecting anything! What was I doing yesterday at this time? What does this incident mean? What can I do? This was his torment. His brain had lost the power to retain its ideas.” His conscience was taking over his mind with what to do, so he would more than likely panic like he has in some other parts in the story. An example of him panicking from the passage is this, “He felt clouds of thunder and lightning gathering above his head. I think that Jean Valjean, or M. Madeline, will not turn himself in to Javert. I think this because he worked 19 years in the chain gang and went through all that suffering. I wouldn’t want to go back to jail ether. I think this will happen also because he said when Jean Valjean would suddenly emerge from the night and stand before him, the good and worthy citizen M. Madeleine would come forth more honored, more peaceful, and more respected than ever. This shows that when he was a criminal, people didn’t respect him. However, when he’s M. Madeline, people honor and respect him for the awesome person that he’s become. He also said he is satisfied, he will leave me in peace, he caught his Jean Valjean! This means that he thinks that Javert will finally leave him alone and he will not have to worry anymore. He knows that some other guy is going to jail for him so he wont have to take the pain and stress of jail again. Thats why I think that Valjean will not turn himself in.

I think that Jean Valjean will not turn him self in because how he acts about champmathieus beign cought and he says now he is free and now he dont have to worrie about it any more they have cought there Jean valjean and they dont think m. madiline is Jean valjean so hes off the hook, and dont need to run because there are other people from the chain gang say that this mathieus guy is jean Valjean because they look alike and if javert dont think its him then he dont have to worrie about it.

i think that he will keep his mouth shut and let the other guy go to prision because he will not want to go to prision again and loose the great life he has now and in line one 129 he says all i have to do is leave things alone

I think he will try not to turn his self in. I think that by how he is acting like he has been in the chain gang for 19 years and he is now free so he wouldn’t want to go back. Quotes that Jean Valjean uses is like saying he don’t want to see him like a quote he used what “It seemed to him that somebody could see him.”
He replied, “Who?” That is when everybody started to say Alas!
Another couple good reason is because he succeeded in disappearing from sight, sold the bishop’s silver, keeping only the candlesticks as souvenirs, quietly slipped from city to city across France. That’s why I think he will not turn his self in.

i disagree because if he did turn himself in he would have to go back to the chain gang and work until he died either that or they would put him in the electric chair when he got there

I think that Valjean will not say anything to Javert and just go on doing what hes doing at the time but I also think that its deep in his mind that he should admit what he has done to Javert........... Hes confused on what to do.But I think he wont.

I agree that he wont turn himself in.. But what if the guards at the prison notice that Champatheiu is not as strong as Jean Valjean? They might catch on to Jean Valjean.

yes he was asking many questions but in lines129 he said all had to do was leave thingd alone nd in line 146 through 152 he was tlkin about how javert has caught his jean valjean nand he dosent have to worrie about him any more.

Jean Valjean might go back to jail in the mans postion because he knows what its like to be in prison. i think this because in line 53 and 54 it says that his first thought was to go, to run, to give himself up, to drag Champmathieu out of jail and go back into the place his rightful place.

I disagree with you because in the selection read it states "And then he said to himself: At this very moment, he had a substitute, that a man named Champmathieu had that bad luck." Which means he has no real reason to turn himself in. Just because his conscience tells him to do the right thing doesn't mean he will.

they might but they is a chance that he satys out of prison and he can stay away.

Tyler i agree with you he might go back to prison but i personly think he will let the other guy go to jail because most of the evidence in the story lead to him staying out of jail.
