In lines 97-98 it says, "He went to the window and threw it wide open.  There was not one star in the sky. He went back and sat down by the table."  What was the author's purpose in pointing out that there weren't any stars?

i think the reason the author said that there was not a star in the sky beacuse to show total darkness and show that what  Jean was thinking was wrong that he should go to jail but he was thinking about letting Champmathieu go to jail. letting Champathieu go to jail would be a bad thing to do so it would be a bad chose and like a dark thing to do.

I think the author mentions that there is not a star in the sky to show that nothing is right if he doent turn himself in. The stars may show support of his decisions. Or the stars may symbolize God's support.

He maybe meant there was no one watching him so no one could influence his desion to reveal himself or not.
