Title: the window
Post by: dkaser on May 20, 2011, 01:17:13 pm
In lines 97-98 it says, "He went to the window and threw it wide open.  There was not one star in the sky. He went back and sat down by the table."  What was the author's purpose in pointing out that there weren't any stars?

I think that the reason there weren't any stars is because it has something to do with his religion. His god could be angry and to show that he doesn't put out the beautiful stars for him to see them . It would make Jean ValJean feel like he was in the darkness for his wrong and that he should confess to his wrong doing .

I think that the author pointed that out for one reason, if Valjean keeps his mouth shut and lets the other guy take the blame, he will go to hell and have nothing to look forward to. Not even the stars in the sky.

Well if he opened the window and there was not a star in site that means that God is trying to tell Valjean that he will go to hell anyways even if he tells Javert who he is or not.

The author is saying that he hasn`t done one good thing but may have done some nice but not good.

to let you know that the sky was dark and the night was dark and eery and there was no one around him and he was alone

the author's purpose of pointing out that there were not any stars in the sky was because the stars not being there resembled how he was hiding his true identity from Javert

I think the author's purpose was to tell us that the stars were like humans and the window is like a dorr. He opened up the door to the outside and he had noone to turn to and tell his secret to

I think the stars mean that he has not did one thing good yet . If he did do stuff good he would have stars out . if you think about it he stole , he tryed to run away from the chain gang , he stole again from a chimneysweeper , he stole again from the bishop and know he is letting a nice good person that did not do nothin go to jail for his mistake . so that is what i think the stars mean .  ;D

He maybe meant there was no one watching him so no one could influence his desion to reveal himself or not.

I think the author mentions that there is not a star in the sky to show that nothing is right if he doent turn himself in. The stars may show support of his decisions. Or the stars may symbolize God's support.

i think the reason the author said that there was not a star in the sky beacuse to show total darkness and show that what  Jean was thinking was wrong that he should go to jail but he was thinking about letting Champmathieu go to jail. letting Champathieu go to jail would be a bad thing to do so it would be a bad chose and like a dark thing to do.

because back then they used stars for dirrection so the could tell whether they were going north south east or west and since there were no stars he determined he couldnt run beacause he doesnt know which way to go.
