because back then they used stars for dirrection so the could tell whether they were going north south east or west and since there were no stars he determined he couldnt run beacause he doesnt know which way to go.

i think the reason the author said that there was not a star in the sky beacuse to show total darkness and show that what  Jean was thinking was wrong that he should go to jail but he was thinking about letting Champmathieu go to jail. letting Champathieu go to jail would be a bad thing to do so it would be a bad chose and like a dark thing to do.
